Planning a pool in Charlestown
Sloping blocks
Plenty of Charlestown blocks fall away from the house. Maxi Rib lets the pool sit partly or fully out of the ground, which can mean less retaining.
Maxi Rib explained →Rock on ridgelines
Rock can turn up on the higher ground around Charlestown, which slows excavation. We assess it at the site visit so the quote reflects the real ground.
Why ground conditions matter →Smaller lots & courtyards
Tight Charlestown yards are where compact shapes shine — and setbacks plus the barrier zone matter more than raw lawn area.

What Compass Pool Centre Newcastle customers say
Verified reviews from our Google Business profile — real customers rating us 4.6 stars.
One of the best customer experiences by far. Bryce is an absolute example of ‘going above and beyond’ when he attended to our pool. He took the time to not only make sure our pool was going to be fixed within his scope but also with chemicals, and also providing us with education on how to look after our pool better. A real honest and kind human. Thank you Bryce.
Our Pool is approx 15 years old now and its been a wonderful addition to our property. It was seamless from the start to the finish of the install all those years ago. It was quick and efficient and it was a pleasure to work with your install team .
Since then we have enjoyed many years of low maintenance and a real feeling of being in a little destination in our backyard … Club M !
Had our Compass pool with in-floor cleaning installed 3 years ago. Could not fault the installation, after sales care and service. The Paramount in-floor cleaning system is amazing and handles leaf litter like magic. Recently had an issue with the module and the local office were so awesome to deal with. Very happy customer!
We have a compass self cleaning pool which was installed in 2000, still cleaning itself like a champion! Definitely recommend! ♥️ Thanks guys. :)
Very helpful and full of knowledge
Great Service. Thanks Team :)

Pools in Charlestown — your questions answered
Charlestown is hilly — will we need retaining walls?
On many sloping blocks, yes, at least some. The alternative is to let the pool sit partly out of the ground using Maxi Rib, which can reduce retaining and create a raised edge for seating. We price both approaches so you can compare.
Our Charlestown backyard has an easement or sewer line — can we still have a pool?
Often you can, but pools generally need to stay clear of sewer mains and easements, or have the water authority approve building nearby. We locate these on your site plan before design so the pool position works first time rather than after a redesign.
Saltwater, chlorine or mineral — which should we choose?
Saltwater is the most common, mineral systems feel softer on skin, and traditional chlorine is the cheapest to set up. See our side-by-side comparison.
Which council approves a pool in Charlestown?
Lake Macquarie City Council handles Development Applications; eligible projects can instead go through a Complying Development Certificate. Around the lake, foreshore lots may be affected by flood planning levels, and parts of the city sit within a declared Mine Subsidence District, where Subsidence Advisory NSW may also need to approve the design. We flag all of this early. More in our certifier’s guide to the NSW approval process.
Our Charlestown backyard is small — what’s the biggest pool that fits?
It comes down to setbacks and the barrier zone rather than raw lawn area. Slim shapes like the X-Trainer 5.8 SL (2.7m wide) or Vogue 7.15 SL (3.0m wide) fit surprisingly tight yards; we overlay outlines on your site plan to show you.
