Planning a pool in Medowie
Koala habitat & tree rules
Parts of Port Stephens Council have koala habitat protections, so clearing trees around Medowie may need approval. Designing around existing trees is often simpler.
The approval process →Reactive clay
Reactive clays common in parts of Medowie swell and shrink with moisture. The shell copes with movement; drainage and engineered surrounds matter most.
Why ground conditions matter →Established trees
Leafy yards in Medowie mean more debris. Removing a significant tree may need Port Stephens Council approval; a cover and in-floor self-cleaning handle the rest.
Do self-cleaning pools work? →Bushfire-prone land
On bushfire-prone land around Medowie, decks and fences may need to meet construction standards — and the pool can be registered as a Static Water Supply for fire crews.

What Compass Pool Centre Newcastle customers say
Verified reviews from our Google Business profile — real customers rating us 4.6 stars.
One of the best customer experiences by far. Bryce is an absolute example of ‘going above and beyond’ when he attended to our pool. He took the time to not only make sure our pool was going to be fixed within his scope but also with chemicals, and also providing us with education on how to look after our pool better. A real honest and kind human. Thank you Bryce.
Our Pool is approx 15 years old now and its been a wonderful addition to our property. It was seamless from the start to the finish of the install all those years ago. It was quick and efficient and it was a pleasure to work with your install team .
Since then we have enjoyed many years of low maintenance and a real feeling of being in a little destination in our backyard … Club M !
Had our Compass pool with in-floor cleaning installed 3 years ago. Could not fault the installation, after sales care and service. The Paramount in-floor cleaning system is amazing and handles leaf litter like magic. Recently had an issue with the module and the local office were so awesome to deal with. Very happy customer!
We have a compass self cleaning pool which was installed in 2000, still cleaning itself like a champion! Definitely recommend! ♥️ Thanks guys. :)
Very helpful and full of knowledge
Great Service. Thanks Team :)

Pools in Medowie — your questions answered
Medowie has lots of trees and koala habitat — can we clear space for a pool?
Removing trees in parts of Port Stephens may need approval because of koala habitat protections. Often the better answer is designing around existing trees — a cover and self-cleaning then handle the leaves.
Is a self-cleaning system worth it?
For most families, yes — in-floor cleaning cuts vacuuming and brushing to almost nothing and improves circulation. Our technical advisor explains whether self-cleaning pools really work.
How much backyard space does a pool really need?
Less than most people think. The Plunge 2.8 is under 3m long, and slim versions of the X-Trainer and Vogue are 2.7–3.0m wide. Add room for coping, paving and the barrier rules around the pool — we overlay real pool outlines on your site plan so you can see the fit.
How far from the house should the pool be on a large Medowie block?
Close enough to supervise from the living area, ideally. Distance also adds to power and plumbing runs, and equipment should sit where its noise won’t bother bedrooms — yours or the neighbours’.
Which council approves a pool in Medowie?
Port Stephens Council assesses Development Applications here; qualifying projects can use a Complying Development Certificate. Coastal and estuarine land can carry acid sulfate soil or coastal hazard mapping, and koala habitat protections apply in parts of the LGA where trees would need to come out. We check the mapping for your lot before design. More in our certifier’s guide to the NSW approval process.
