Planning a pool in Merewether
Sloping blocks
Plenty of Merewether blocks fall away from the house. Maxi Rib lets the pool sit partly or fully out of the ground, which can mean less retaining.
Maxi Rib explained →Rock on ridgelines
Rock can turn up on the higher ground around Merewether, which slows excavation. We assess it at the site visit so the quote reflects the real ground.
Why ground conditions matter →Salt air
Close to the coast, specify marine-grade (316) fence hardware and keep equipment out of direct salt spray. The fibreglass shell itself won’t corrode.

What Compass Pool Centre Newcastle customers say
Verified reviews from our Google Business profile — real customers rating us 4.6 stars.
One of the best customer experiences by far. Bryce is an absolute example of ‘going above and beyond’ when he attended to our pool. He took the time to not only make sure our pool was going to be fixed within his scope but also with chemicals, and also providing us with education on how to look after our pool better. A real honest and kind human. Thank you Bryce.
Our Pool is approx 15 years old now and its been a wonderful addition to our property. It was seamless from the start to the finish of the install all those years ago. It was quick and efficient and it was a pleasure to work with your install team .
Since then we have enjoyed many years of low maintenance and a real feeling of being in a little destination in our backyard … Club M !
Had our Compass pool with in-floor cleaning installed 3 years ago. Could not fault the installation, after sales care and service. The Paramount in-floor cleaning system is amazing and handles leaf litter like magic. Recently had an issue with the module and the local office were so awesome to deal with. Very happy customer!
We have a compass self cleaning pool which was installed in 2000, still cleaning itself like a champion! Definitely recommend! ♥️ Thanks guys. :)
Very helpful and full of knowledge
Great Service. Thanks Team :)

Pools in Merewether — your questions answered
Can a pool be installed on a steep Merewether Heights block?
Usually. The challenges are getting a crane within reach from the street above or below, and rock — which can turn up on ridgelines and slows excavation. We assess both at the site visit so the quote reflects the real ground.
Does a pool near the beach need more maintenance?
A little. Sand tracked in from the beach and salt spray mean emptying skimmer baskets more often and rinsing fence hardware. An in-floor self-cleaning system takes care of most of the sand on the floor — see our self-cleaning maintenance guide.
Which council approves a pool in Merewether?
Pools here are approved either through a Development Application with City of Newcastle, or — where the block and design meet the state’s complying development standards — a Complying Development Certificate from a registered certifier. Older parts of Newcastle can bring heritage controls, mine subsidence checks or tight setbacks into play, which may push a project towards a DA. We check the controls for your address before quoting. More in our certifier’s guide to the NSW approval process.
Can we see the pools in person before deciding?
Yes — our Tomago display centre has shells and colour samples you can see and touch, and it sits right next to the Compass Pools NSW factory. Call ahead and we’ll make sure someone is free to walk you through.
How long from first enquiry to swimming?
Approvals usually take the longest — typically several weeks, depending on the pathway. Once approved, a fibreglass shell can be craned in and filled within days; fencing, paving and landscaping then take a few more weeks.
Will sea air damage a pool in Merewether?
The fibreglass shell itself won’t rust or corrode. The parts worth specifying carefully near the coast are the metal ones: marine-grade (316) stainless fence hardware and ladders, and pool equipment housed out of direct salt spray. Rinsing glass fencing and hardware every few weeks keeps everything looking new.
