Planning a pool in Nelson Bay
Sloping blocks
Plenty of Nelson Bay blocks fall away from the house. Maxi Rib lets the pool sit partly or fully out of the ground, which can mean less retaining.
Maxi Rib explained →Salt air
Close to the coast, specify marine-grade (316) fence hardware and keep equipment out of direct salt spray. The fibreglass shell itself won’t corrode.
Pool barrier rules →Holiday homes & rentals
Pools at tourist accommodation get regular council barrier inspections, and a leased property needs a valid compliance certificate.

What Compass Pool Centre Newcastle customers say
Verified reviews from our Google Business profile — real customers rating us 4.6 stars.
One of the best customer experiences by far. Bryce is an absolute example of ‘going above and beyond’ when he attended to our pool. He took the time to not only make sure our pool was going to be fixed within his scope but also with chemicals, and also providing us with education on how to look after our pool better. A real honest and kind human. Thank you Bryce.
Our Pool is approx 15 years old now and its been a wonderful addition to our property. It was seamless from the start to the finish of the install all those years ago. It was quick and efficient and it was a pleasure to work with your install team .
Since then we have enjoyed many years of low maintenance and a real feeling of being in a little destination in our backyard … Club M !
Had our Compass pool with in-floor cleaning installed 3 years ago. Could not fault the installation, after sales care and service. The Paramount in-floor cleaning system is amazing and handles leaf litter like magic. Recently had an issue with the module and the local office were so awesome to deal with. Very happy customer!
We have a compass self cleaning pool which was installed in 2000, still cleaning itself like a champion! Definitely recommend! ♥️ Thanks guys. :)
Very helpful and full of knowledge
Great Service. Thanks Team :)
Pools in Nelson Bay — your questions answered
Our Nelson Bay house is on a hillside with views — what pool works?
Sloping view blocks are where Maxi Rib shines: the pool can sit partly or fully above ground with a raised edge facing the view, often with less retaining than a fully sunken pool would need.
Can we see the pools in person before deciding?
Yes — our Tomago display centre has shells and colour samples you can see and touch, and it sits right next to the Compass Pools NSW factory. Call ahead and we’ll make sure someone is free to walk you through.
What affects the cost of a pool in Nelson Bay?
As an indicative guide only, most of our fibreglass projects land somewhere between about $35,000 and $85,000+ installed, depending on pool size and extras such as fencing, paving, heating and self-cleaning. Near the coast the big variables are groundwater (dewatering adds cost), sand stability during excavation, and marine-grade fencing hardware. A free site visit gives you a fixed, itemised quote for your property.
Does a high water table near the coast affect a pool?
It can. Groundwater close to the surface pushes up on an empty pool, so coastal installs often need the excavation dewatered and the pool should never be drained without advice. Every Compass shell includes HydroPro™ hydrostatic protection. Here’s why pools can lift out of wet ground.
Which council approves a pool in Nelson Bay?
Port Stephens Council assesses Development Applications here; qualifying projects can use a Complying Development Certificate. Coastal and estuarine land can carry acid sulfate soil or coastal hazard mapping, and koala habitat protections apply in parts of the LGA where trees would need to come out. We check the mapping for your lot before design. More in our certifier’s guide to the NSW approval process.
What fencing suits a pool with water views?
Frameless glass keeps the view open; near the coast, specify marine-grade hardware. Whatever the material, it must meet the NSW pool barrier rules — and if a house wall forms part of the barrier, extra rules apply to its doors and windows.
