Planning a pool in Newcastle
Mine subsidence check
Parts of Newcastle sit within a declared Mine Subsidence District. If yours does, Subsidence Advisory NSW may need to sign off the design as well as City of Newcastle or a certifier.
The approval process →Smaller lots & courtyards
Tight Newcastle yards are where compact shapes shine — and setbacks plus the barrier zone matter more than raw lawn area.
The Plunge range →Heritage controls
Heritage areas in Newcastle usually mean a Development Application with City of Newcastle rather than complying development, with attention to fences and anything visible from the street.
The approval process →Salt air
Close to the coast, specify marine-grade (316) fence hardware and keep equipment out of direct salt spray. The fibreglass shell itself won’t corrode.

What Compass Pool Centre Newcastle customers say
Verified reviews from our Google Business profile — real customers rating us 4.6 stars.
One of the best customer experiences by far. Bryce is an absolute example of ‘going above and beyond’ when he attended to our pool. He took the time to not only make sure our pool was going to be fixed within his scope but also with chemicals, and also providing us with education on how to look after our pool better. A real honest and kind human. Thank you Bryce.
Our Pool is approx 15 years old now and its been a wonderful addition to our property. It was seamless from the start to the finish of the install all those years ago. It was quick and efficient and it was a pleasure to work with your install team .
Since then we have enjoyed many years of low maintenance and a real feeling of being in a little destination in our backyard … Club M !
Had our Compass pool with in-floor cleaning installed 3 years ago. Could not fault the installation, after sales care and service. The Paramount in-floor cleaning system is amazing and handles leaf litter like magic. Recently had an issue with the module and the local office were so awesome to deal with. Very happy customer!
We have a compass self cleaning pool which was installed in 2000, still cleaning itself like a champion! Definitely recommend! ♥️ Thanks guys. :)
Very helpful and full of knowledge
Great Service. Thanks Team :)

Pools in Newcastle — your questions answered
Can we fit a pool on an older Newcastle block with narrow side access?
Many of Newcastle’s older suburbs have narrow lots with houses close to the boundary. Fibreglass shells are usually craned over the house, so side access matters less than people expect — crane position, power lines and room for an excavator matter more. We check all three at the site visit.
How long from first enquiry to swimming?
Approvals usually take the longest — typically several weeks, depending on the pathway. Once approved, a fibreglass shell can be craned in and filled within days; fencing, paving and landscaping then take a few more weeks.
Is mine subsidence a concern for pools in Newcastle?
Parts of Newcastle sit within a declared Mine Subsidence District because of the city’s coal-mining history. If your property is in one, Subsidence Advisory NSW may need to approve the design. It rarely stops a pool, but it should be checked before design, not after.
What affects the cost of a pool in Newcastle?
As an indicative guide only, most of our fibreglass projects land somewhere between about $35,000 and $85,000+ installed, depending on pool size and extras such as fencing, paving, heating and self-cleaning. Near the coast the big variables are groundwater (dewatering adds cost), sand stability during excavation, and marine-grade fencing hardware. A free site visit gives you a fixed, itemised quote for your property.
Saltwater, chlorine or mineral — which should we choose?
Saltwater is the most common, mineral systems feel softer on skin, and traditional chlorine is the cheapest to set up. See our side-by-side comparison.
How do we deal with wind on an exposed coastal block?
Wind strips heat and water from a pool surface faster than sun alone. A cover is the single biggest help; glass fencing on the windward side doubles as a windbreak; and positioning the pool in the lee of the house makes a noticeable difference to how warm it feels.
Do I need council approval for a pool in Newcastle?
Pools here are approved either through a Development Application with City of Newcastle, or — where the block and design meet the state’s complying development standards — a Complying Development Certificate from a registered certifier. Older parts of Newcastle can bring heritage controls, mine subsidence checks or tight setbacks into play, which may push a project towards a DA. We check the controls for your address before quoting. More in our certifier’s guide to the NSW approval process.
