Planning a pool in Port Stephens
Sandy ground
Sand around Port Stephens digs easily but can collapse into the hole, so excavations need careful battering or shoring.
Why ground conditions matter →High water table
Groundwater can sit close to the surface in parts of Port Stephens, especially after rain. Every Compass shell includes HydroPro™ hydrostatic protection, and installs may need dewatering.
Can a pool really float? →Koala habitat & tree rules
Parts of Port Stephens Council have koala habitat protections, so clearing trees around Port Stephens may need approval. Designing around existing trees is often simpler.
The approval process →Holiday homes & rentals
Pools at tourist accommodation get regular council barrier inspections, and a leased property needs a valid compliance certificate.

What Compass Pool Centre Newcastle customers say
Verified reviews from our Google Business profile — real customers rating us 4.6 stars.
One of the best customer experiences by far. Bryce is an absolute example of ‘going above and beyond’ when he attended to our pool. He took the time to not only make sure our pool was going to be fixed within his scope but also with chemicals, and also providing us with education on how to look after our pool better. A real honest and kind human. Thank you Bryce.
Our Pool is approx 15 years old now and its been a wonderful addition to our property. It was seamless from the start to the finish of the install all those years ago. It was quick and efficient and it was a pleasure to work with your install team .
Since then we have enjoyed many years of low maintenance and a real feeling of being in a little destination in our backyard … Club M !
Had our Compass pool with in-floor cleaning installed 3 years ago. Could not fault the installation, after sales care and service. The Paramount in-floor cleaning system is amazing and handles leaf litter like magic. Recently had an issue with the module and the local office were so awesome to deal with. Very happy customer!
We have a compass self cleaning pool which was installed in 2000, still cleaning itself like a champion! Definitely recommend! ♥️ Thanks guys. :)
Very helpful and full of knowledge
Great Service. Thanks Team :)

Pools in Port Stephens — your questions answered
Does Port Stephens sand make a pool easier to install?
Sand digs easily, but it can also collapse into the hole and often comes with groundwater close to the surface. Sandy installs need careful battering or shoring and sometimes dewatering — and HydroPro™ protection matters. Here’s how groundwater affects pools.
What affects the cost of a pool in Port Stephens?
As an indicative guide only, most of our fibreglass projects land somewhere between about $35,000 and $85,000+ installed, depending on pool size and extras such as fencing, paving, heating and self-cleaning. Near the coast the big variables are groundwater (dewatering adds cost), sand stability during excavation, and marine-grade fencing hardware. A free site visit gives you a fixed, itemised quote for your property.
Do fibreglass pools crack?
Properly installed fibreglass pools are flexible and very durable; most problems people hear about come from poor installation or ground conditions. Our technical expert explains.
Which council approves a pool in Port Stephens?
Port Stephens Council assesses Development Applications here; qualifying projects can use a Complying Development Certificate. Coastal and estuarine land can carry acid sulfate soil or coastal hazard mapping, and koala habitat protections apply in parts of the LGA where trees would need to come out. We check the mapping for your lot before design. More in our certifier’s guide to the NSW approval process.
How do we deal with wind on an exposed coastal block?
Wind strips heat and water from a pool surface faster than sun alone. A cover is the single biggest help; glass fencing on the windward side doubles as a windbreak; and positioning the pool in the lee of the house makes a noticeable difference to how warm it feels.
Do holiday rentals in Port Stephens need anything extra for the pool?
Yes. Pools at tourist and visitor accommodation must be inspected by council for barrier compliance on a regular cycle, and a property leased with a pool needs a valid compliance certificate. See our certifier’s guide to NSW pool barrier rules.
