Have you ever jumped into a pool for a swim and felt someone’s unwanted hair caught in your fingers as soon as you started your breast stroke? The refreshing swim and your entire mood is ruined in an instant. The moment is over immediately and the only thing on your mind is to get out and take a clean shower.
This is what a swimming pool with poor circulation looks and feels like. A poorly circulated pool is going to leave you with unwanted debris and will also turn your clean pool into an algae pea soup. Taking a swim in such water is not going to be in question once you come across the debris firsthand.
While there are several ways to keep your swimming pool clean, clear, pure and fresh, circulation is the most important of them all. In fact, if you want a healthy pool with clear and clean water that rejuvenates you instead of making you feel all dirty, you need to invest in the right pool circulation. Only then will you be able to enjoy swimming in a pool full of pure water that revives freshness the moment you dive in it.
Why Do I Need to Invest in Pool Circulation?
The idea of having a swimming pool at home gives the picture of a resort-style living that many of us dream of. It resonates with fun-times, sunshine and pure relaxation. It brings you the much-needed me-time where you can just dive into your pool right in your backyard and freshen up yourself in clean water. It takes all the worries of life away from you for some time. However, keeping a pool well-maintained is also as important as having it at your home. Whether it is a small pool, lap pool or infinity pool, you need to make sure that the water in the pool is clean, safe, and healthy to swim in, for you and your family.
When something is just not right in your pool, you are often recommended to clean the pool manually. If that doesn’t work, the pool equipment is to be blamed. The problem in most cases is not the pool equipment but the poor circulation and water flow in your pool. The key to a clean and healthy pool is proper pool circulation.
A major part of having a pool that is healthy, safe and clean (where the water doesn’t go green and doesn’t leave you with sore ears after a swim) is a well circulated and filtered water throughout the day. However, maximising circulation in the pool is something that is often overlooked by not only the customers but also the salespeople. If you want to have a pool that you love instead of something that just adds to the weekly chores you must do, you need to invest in a good circulation system. Keeping the water stagnant is just going to add to your problems. The water stays clean and healthy when it is moving regularly. Don’t let it stand still. Install a circulation system in it to make it clean and healthy for you and your family.
What Do the Experts Say?
As per the pool experts, as well as the pool standards in Australia and New Zealand, the entire volume of water you have in your pool needs to be pumped out, sanitised, filtered, and then returned to the pool, once every day. While the circulated swimming pools have the ability to move this much water each day, they tend to move only a small portion of water from a limited area over and over again, which disrupts the purity and cleanliness of water. And with poor circulation, the water in the pool tends to become dirty and impure to dive in for the relaxation you are after.
The Eyeball and Skimmer System
A traditional pool is usually run using the eyeball and skimmer system. The skimmer is a device used to skim the debris off the surface of water and circulate water at the top of the pool. To keep your pool clean and have clear water in it, it is very important for the skimmer to be functioning properly. The skimmer basket and the skimmer wire should be at their place, free from all kinds of damages, and work freely. When the skimmer box removes water from the surface using a pump, it is then pushed through a filter which cleans the water and is then returned to the pool using jets placed on the walls opposite to the skimmer. These jets used to return water to the pool are known as eyeballs. Eyeballs are located in the top 1-2 feet of water.
With the eyeball and skimmer, the top 1-2 feet of water moves regularly, however, the deeper parts of the pool remain still. This area, where the water is almost stagnant all the time, is a breeding ground for bacteria and algae that tend to spoil all the water in the pool. Thus, to make sure the water is as healthy as possible, you should consider ways to improve circulation bottom-to-top. As the water moves, it becomes difficult for algae and bacteria to grow here, keeping it clean, safe, and healthy.

Compass Pools Makes the Difference
Extensive knowledge about the mechanics of the skimmer and eyeball system and the experience we have working on the circulation system of pools has helped us shape the way we build pools. We offer our customers two additional choices when it comes to choosing their circulation systems.
Vantage Circulation System for a Healthy Pool
The most popular option we offer our client is the self-cleaning pool option. Also known as Vantage In-Floor Cleaning System, the self-cleaning pool option improves your pool circulation dramatically. This circulation system works to remove water from the pool using a special ‘main drain’. The water is then returned to the pool, using perfectly timed and fully automated jets that are placed not only on the top, but also on the floor of the pool as well. This ensures movement at the bottom of the pool as well as on the top. The eyeball and skimmer work on the top of the pool while the Vantage system takes care of the bottom, ensuring a clean pool that is perfect for a safe and refreshing swim.
Vantage circulation system not only tackles the issue of poor circulation, but also reduces chemical inputs, maximises distribution of the sanitising chemicals in the pool, and increases the efficiency of the heat pump. Thus, with Vantage pool circulation system, you will be able to save on the operating cost of the pool and will also eliminate the need of expensive pool cleaning equipment. Everything will be done automatically by the Vantage circulation system and you will not have to worry about anything at all to keep your pool clean and well-circulated.
The Compass Logic System
Another pool circulation system offered as an alternative to the traditional skimmer and eyeball approach is the Compass Logic system. This system works on the same system as the Vantage system. It focuses on creating regular and effective circulations in the lower part of the pool where the skimmer and eyeball system fails to be effective. It is an ideal circulation system for a healthy pool.
The system works by removing water from the deep parts of the pool using two drains strategically placed 2/3rd down the pool walls. The water is then returned into the pool using special swing jets that are designed to push freshly-filtered water towards the bottom of the pool. To maximise chemical distribution, the swing jets also change their direction and evenly spread warm water heated by the sun. The Logic system ensures maximum circulation of water and prevents the growth of bacteria and algae.
The Logic system can also be enhanced and made energy efficient to reduce power consumption. The use of energy efficient pumps is common among people these days. This pump runs at a high speed for a short period of time. It then shifts back a gear and runs at a low speed for the rest of the filtration cycle. This, however, doesn’t work in a traditional pool where the water is running at low speeds. The low flow pump, in this case, further reduces the movement and mixing of water in the pool that affects pool cleaning. To make sure this doesn’t happen, we use a supercharged skimmer unit. It requires little to no suction from the pool pump. The pump suction is redirected to focus on the wall drains. Thus, an energy efficient pump can be installed without having to sacrifice water movement. This will lead to dramatic cut in the power usage while you also wouldn’t have to worry about not having a healthy pool.
