How to choose the right swimming pool shape

The best pool shape depends on how you’ll use the water and what your block allows. Here’s how the Compass range breaks down — with real pools we’ve installed around Newcastle and the Hunter.

Family pool shapes

Family pools need a generous shallow area for kids and somewhere for adults to sit. The Sanctuary is our most popular family shape, with a full-width entry step that doubles as in-water seating. It ranges from compact to resort-sized — see the 10.6m Sanctuary we built in Louth Park and the much smaller Sanctuary 4.8 in Medowie.

Lap pool shapes

For swimming laps, length and a consistent depth matter most. The Fastlane is a dedicated lap pool with a uniform depth and a narrow footprint that runs along a side boundary — like our 12.3m Fastlane in Alison on a sloping block. If you want laps and family play in one pool, the X-Trainer combines a swimming corridor with a wider leisure end, as in this X-Trainer 7.2 in the Hunter Valley.

Plunge pools and small pool shapes

Small backyards and courtyards suit the Plunge range — compact rectangles that start under 3 metres long, like the 5m Plunge in an Adamstown courtyard. Slim versions of the Vogue and X-Trainer are only 2.7–3.0m wide, and freestanding Express pools can sit above ground where digging is difficult.

Pool and spa combos

A Compass pool and spa combo puts the pool and spa in one shell — one excavation, one crane lift and one barrier around both. If you’d rather add a separate spa, wader or immersion pod, see spas, waders & pods.

Rectangular pool shapes for modern homes

Clean rectangular pool shapes like the Vogue and the longer Contemporary line up with paving, decks and feature walls, which is why they suit contemporary architecture.

Pool shapes for sloping blocks

On a slope the shape matters less than how it’s installed. Maxi Rib construction lets most Compass shapes sit fully in-ground, partly out of the ground or fully above it, which can cut down on retaining walls.

Pool shapes and sizes — your questions answered

What pool shape is best for a small backyard?

Compact rectangular shapes make the most of a small backyard. The Compass Plunge range starts at 2.85m long, and slim versions of the Vogue and X-Trainer are only 2.7–3.0m wide. Setbacks and the pool barrier zone usually decide what fits, so we overlay real pool outlines on your site plan.

What is the best pool shape for swimming laps?

A long, narrow shape with a consistent depth. The Fastlane is a dedicated lap pool with a uniform 1.46m depth in 10.34m and 12.26m lengths (custom up to 30m). If you also want a play area for the family, the X-Trainer combines a swimming corridor with a wider leisure end.

Which pool shape is best for families?

Shapes with a large shallow area and built-in seating suit families best. The Sanctuary has a full-width entry step that kids use as a play ledge, and it comes in sizes from 4.8m to 10.6m, including narrow versions for tighter blocks.

What size pool do I need?

Think about how you will use it. A plunge pool of 3–5m suits cooling off and relaxing; 7–8m suits most families; 9m and longer suits regular swimming. Remember that bigger pools cost more to heat and run.

Can I get a pool and spa in one?

Yes. Compass pool and spa combos — the Fusion 8, Sanctuary Pool Combos and Plunge Pool Combos — integrate a spa into the same fibreglass shell, so there is one excavation and one barrier around both.

How much does a fibreglass pool cost in Newcastle?

As an indicative guide only, most fibreglass pool projects in Newcastle fall between about $35,000 and $85,000+ installed, depending on the pool shape and size, site access, and extras like fencing, paving, heating and self-cleaning. A free on-site visit gives you a fixed, itemised quote.
